Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art developed by the Gracie family in Brazil that specializes in controlling your opponent once you take him to the ground, using leverage and finishing holds to submission holds to finish the fight, rather than brute strength
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a full contact martial art where all aspects of martial arts are utilised – from striking to kicking to wrestling and grappling (BJJ). Whilst there is some controversy surrounding the violence in MMA, it is generally a well governed sport with Extreme MMA placing a high priority on it’s student safety.
You can start learning BJJ from the age of about 6. There is no age limit either. BJJ is not about brute strength. It’s about leverage and technique. At Extreme, we structure our classes to suit the beginner, intermediate and advanced practitioner. You will never be put in a class where you will be expected to compete with anyone not suited to your stage of development. There are also separate classes for juniors
At Extreme, we do not teach MMA to juniors and there is also no age limit.
Like all contact sports, including martial arts, there is always the risk you may get injured. However, at Extreme, with our internationally regarded commitment to professional instruction, we promote a safe, friendly and non-political training environment.
For your 2 free introductory classes, you only need to wear shorts or tracksuit pants plus a t shirt. After that you will need to purchase a Gi (or kimono)- the traditional jacket, pants and belt. It is recommended you always wear a mouth guard and groin protector.
Generally in MMA you wear a T shirt or rash guard and shorts. You must always wear a mouth guard and groin protector.
You should get your first belt (blue) within a year or two of dedicated training. After that it could take 2 to 3 years of hard training for each belt. It usually takes a minimum of 8 to 10 years to get the BJJ BLACK BELT.
The typical BJJ class consists of warm ups and stretching, to enable fitness and minimize the risk of injury. After that the instructor takes you through technique drills, followed by grappling or sparring. Each class typically lasts for about one hour.
As in BJJ, a typical class consists of warm ups and stretching, then technical drills around punching, kicking, wrestling and ground work, followed by controlled sparring.
Why should I train in BJJ?
BJJ is a proven fighting system. Over the last 15 years there is virtually no martial art that doesn’t recognize the benefits of BJJ and adapt it into its system. Most fights end up on the ground and that’s where the undisputed superiority of BJJ lies. When you’re on the ground if you know how to use leverage and apply submissions, the size of your opponent is virtually insignificant. Try it, feeling is believing!
Why should I train in MMA?
MMA is generally for the person who wants to compete in MMA or wants to round his or her self defence skills by learning how to combine the stand up and ground facets of their fight game.
