Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) was formed from Kodokan judo and eventually came to be its own art after experimentation and adaption of judo through instructors. It is a sport that is involved in self defence

Origins of BJJ

The first jiu-jitsu school opened in Brazil in 1909 by Geo Omori. He went on to teach and train and number of people, laying the groundwork for spreading the art around the world. It was in 1917 that Carlos Gracie watched a demonstration at the Da Paz Theatre and wanted to learn judo. He passed this knowledge onto his brothers and gradually adapted a softer version of judo that relied on ground fighting. The Gracie family has become synonymous with BJJ.

Types of Jiu-Jitsu

There are two different types of jiu-jitsu: Sport Jiu-Jitsu and Self Defense Jiu-Jitsu. Sport Jiu-Jitsu involves tournaments and training for students to prepare them for competition. The goal is to win through points. On the other hand, Self Defense Jiu-Jitsu has a focus on self protection preparing for encounters that may happen on the street.

Practising Jiu-Jitsu

If you are looking to start classes in Jiu-Jitsu, the team at Extreme MMA can help you out. The basic premise of learning the art is that most of your fights end up on the ground. Each class starts with warm-up exercises, following by grappling techniques and drills, then light sparring. You can join a beginner class or one for a more advanced student to learn the art of self-defense.
