At Extreme MMA, we love Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or BJJ Melbourne. And we think everyone should give it a go. After all, it’s a great workout for your body, gives you self-defence skills and it sharpens your mind. But if you are just starting out, it can be tough, like any sport. So here are our tips if you’re new to the sport.
Get into habits
To become good at BJJ, you have to start forming good habits now. And it’s not just remembering to practice what you’ve learnt at training. If you get into good sleeping habits and make consistent nutrition choices, your body will thank you and it will pay off in training.
Unlike some forms of martial arts that require strengthening of only certain muscle groups, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu relies on a fighter’s core strength. You should focus on gaining strength in your abdomen, back and chest. A strong core will help you in all aspects of the discipline.
Find the right teacher
Probably the most important when starting out any martial arts is to find the right teacher. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is no different. You need to make sure you feel comfortable with the teacher. You also need to feel you’re in the right class and in the right training environment. That way, you are more likely to stick with it and maintain your passion.
